Blog 1: My Personal Advocacy Journal.

The one thing that inspire me about my advocacy plan is working with the professionals about help them create strategies that would improve classroom management.  The things that excites me are researching about management behaviors and safety, finding strategies that would work for the child's needs and interacting with the teachers and children while analyzing my plan to engage in my in my advocacy plan.  Research as shown that teacher's action in their classrooms have twice the impact on student achievement as do school policies regarding curriculum, assessment, staff collegiality and community involvement (Marzano, 2003a & ASCD).  It's important to stay on every situation and hope for a change in the social classroom environment.

The biggest challenges is to figure out each child main causes of their behaviors and making sure that the parents get involve in the child's situation. I really hope to make a difference in changes of representing my improvement plan.  I also hope that they understand the reasons and help build a positive reinforcement in the classroom.  The most effective way of helping parents overcome these situation is to talking them to them individually and discuss ways to help them understand the importance of safety. This would establish clear expectation and consequences, learning goals, and exhibit assertive behaviors throughout the each classrooms. The ways to encourage others in my advocacy plan is to offer reinforcement strategies to identity the appropriate behaviors used to create awareness in children's future learning.

  1. You are absolutely right that there are a lot of behavior plans you can do in and around your classroom. Keeping parents informed on what’s happening with their child and getting feedback would definitely help. In my classroom when a child get a red note sent home it’s explained to the parents what happened and to speak with their child about why they received a red note. Not all our children do this because they just don’t understand the three light steps of their behavior. One child has to earn 8 basketballs throughout the day to reach statues of getting a good letter sent home.

  2. Classroom management is a great topic to advocate. I am a program specialist at a day care center and my job is to help teachers with behaviors, classroom set up, classroom management, curriculum, etc. but there are times that it is still challenging to overcome. Positive reinforcement is our philosophy but what if the behavior continues and the parents are not on the same page as the teacher? Those are issues I have faced in the past which are difficult to overcome.

  3. In your post, you mentioned determining the causes of each child’s behavior. A source that might be useful is the Glasser Institute. The Glasser institute focuses on choice theory. Choice theory aims at determining the causes of children’s behaviors. For example, a child is acting out each day before lunch. After some investigation, the teacher realizes that the child has a need for food that is not being met. He or she determines that the child needs a snack between breakfast and lunch and the unwanted behaviors diminish. A good classroom manager looks for opportunities to help students get their needs met.

  4. I think classroom managment is just one of the key elements in the Early childhood classroom environment. What are some goals you hope to gain while finishing your advocacy project? In what ways do you hope to over the challenges you are facing? What reinforcement strategies do you hope to put in place with regards to your topic?

  5. I agree that classroom management is very important! I have seen classrooms that are total chaos. Children cannot learn in an environment like that, and instead of preparing children for school this can actually make them less prepared. We need to make sure that all teachers have the resources they need that can help them have a well-managed classroom where children feel free to learn and take risks. I am glad that you have chosen this as a topic for advocacy. Have you ever heard of the CLASS tool? It has very specific goals for classrooms to meet in order to maintain good classroom management.

  7. I agree with you that classroom managment is so important and parents need to make sure that they are infromed of things going on in the classroom. I believe that teachers need to stay on top of training and things on classroom management that way they know how to keep control of their class. I think parents should be informed of their childs behavior so they can try to fix the problem. Communication is essential in the process and making sure that eveyone is on the same page.
